Arrived Safely

We made it to Austin safely. So far, fewer patriotic bumperstickers and flags than I expected.

It kind of amazes me that you can put some stuff in a storage unit, pay some money, and it's really all there just like you left it fifteen months later. Austin seems kind of dingy, which is weird since Berlin is actually very dingy. Same old stores and buildings, even the same potholes on our street. We haven't had reverse-culture shock yet, although my “English-speaking person nearby” radar hasn't turned off yet, and so I find myself eavesdropping on every conversation I hear. We've also managed to spend about 6 hours in the car already; not spending any time in a car was just about the best thing about living in Berlin for me. So this is a bad thing.

i thought i was the only one who does that! Blocking out all other noise cos I hear an English, American or Australian accent talking my mother tongue.
Glad you arrived safely. You'll be glad to be out of Berlin: a nuclear winter seems to have arrived in the past couple of days...
