BBCi Design Process book
Have you not yet heard about Matt's BBCi design process book that's (temporarily?) available? Hmm. You better read the popular blogs more often.... This is free knowledge. Go and download asap. (It's a 7+ Meg PDF, BTW).
I recently worked with a Berlin company, eye-square, to do some usability testing for Ford. Part of that was testing that looks very similar to the "Voice Mapping" and "Bipolar Emotional Response" tests that the BBCi group did. I've never used these before, and I must admit that I doubt their value at the usability testing stage, but I'm pleased to see that we weren't (exactly) making this stuff up for Ford. eye-square's statistical guru Michael was able to do some nifty spreadsheet analysis to show quantitatively the effect of Ford's design ideas on its brand by using these and a few other design process tools. Although they may look quite "soft", in the hands of someone with statistical smarts (not me), they can really reveal interesting stuff.
