Self-links

The, er, "curator" of the online Pepys' Diary site writes about discovering TrackBack as a self-reference tool. It's doing a sort of automatic cross-indexing, building its own connections from footnotes back to other entries. That's a cool idea, at least as long as it can be kept from going out of control. What are some other applications of this?
