Dynamic Cities

I'm finally reading for the first time Jane Jacobs' "The Death and Life of Great American Cities." What a wonderful book it is; I'm embarassed that I haven't read it before. Deconstructing the Modernist visions that have defined most building and planning projects in the US with wit, style, and exceptionally good prose, Jacobs puts to shame pretty much every architect-author I've read. Best of all, her analyses of sidewalks, streets, and interactions between city dwellers make me think about being back in Berlin (and other good European cities), where things have worked "right" for a very long time.

Along those lines, you might also enjoy "From Bauhaus to Our House" by Tom Wolfe.
