Programming article at B&A

Hey hey! My article at Boxes and Arrows, Programming for Information Architects is out! That really should be "Introduction to Programming for IAs", it's quite basic.

It was hard to figure out how to approach this topic, partly because I'm in no way an advanced programmer. I know that there are IAs with CS backgrounds who could code circles around me. But as it turned out from talking to people, there are plenty of IAs with no programming experience at all, and only a vague idea of what "object-oriented" actually means. (For that matter, I met a programmer the other day who hadn't ever worked in an OOP way. Amazing.) Also, I've worked with lots of students who find the basic concepts of variables, conditions, and loops pretty hard to understand. So I wanted to really cover the most basic concepts first.

Writing is fun and I wish I had more chances to do it properly, not just this daily posting thing. I actually kind of enjoyed writing my master's thesis back in 1996. It was my first "IA" project: all my notes were written on index cards that I spread all over my living room floor and stacked them up in the order that I wanted to write the thesis in, then just went through one-by-one.

Excellent article, Andrew. It's such a great intro that I think it should be "Introduction to Programming for Anyone." Cheers!
