On buying a car
So Heather and I have just bought a car. It's a 2002, so it's not new, but believe it or not this is the first car I've ever owned that arrived to me with fewer than 100k miles on it.
Purchase negotiations are a strange thing. Not being homeowners, we haven't done anything like this. We heard, and were prepared for, the whole litany of sales pitches: "don't drive home in that old clunker!" "I'm barely making any profit on this!" "Car sales are really bad right now, this would be great for me." (Oh please.) "It's an investment, don't quibble over a thousand dollars!"
I'd expected I would hate all this, and really was anxious about it. But oddly, I wasn't. I actually kind of enjoyed seeing this guy literally sweating over us. We drew out the process, I kept getting up and strolling over to the drinking fountain. Any pretty much everything he tried, we countered with, oh, we have plenty of time to buy a car, I'm sure something else will turn up. Nothing gets them more worked up than seeing you appear to lost interest. They hate that! Still, I'm glad it's done.
