Adobe Illustrator CS file corruption & lost work

At work we have two seperate copies of Illustrator CS. Both will at times flip out and lose huge portions of drawings, often with an error that implies the underlying Postscript's been messed up. (Today it was stumped by "an offending character"...a single comma somewhere.)

So far this is totally unpredictable. The files we make tend to be fairly small (wireframes, not giant print documents). The worst part is that the corruption seems to happen invisibly, so you never notice until after you've saved work. Occassionally, you'll see sections of your drawing becoming damaged, toggling into a Preview-like state, just before the corruption. Sometimes portions of the file are recoverable: we've been able to recover text using Acrobat, or by Placing the damaged file into a new Illustrator document.

Anyone seen this before or have suggestions? I can't find anything similar by Googling the problem.
