Street Talk
Peterme writes about going to the after-party for Urban Atmospheres' Street Talk event. I admit I have much the same reaction to the ideas in it that he's had: "But in this present, I just can't get worked up about social networking systems, or mobile devices, or some combination thereof. I try, but my eyes glaze over. Instead, I've opted to doggedly pursue making things make sense for people...." This despite an schedule of speakers that's really impressive and varied. But what could a tagline like "Proactive archeology of our urban landscapes and emerging technology" possibly mean?
Honestly, Mobile Coffee Unit seems like the most appealing part of the whole event? Here's what Mobile Coffee Unit is: "Every Saturday, I daisy-chain 1300 ft of safety orange extension cord and string it from my kitchen to the eastern end of alamo square park, where I power my Mr. Coffee. The first saturday, I met some very interesting people and acquired an entire band from all four corners of the park." In other words, "an interesting way to meet people in the park is to make free coffee for them."

Well, as a speaker there I can say the most appealing part of the event was getting to discuss interesting things with interesting people. And frankly, I saw every indication that people there wanted to "doggedly pursue making things make sense for people". And a "proactive archeology" suggests to me a desire to dig a bit deeper into what we already know in order to help us understand what is to come. Is that not a positive act?
