Peel Sessions records
I’m sad to read about John Peel’s death. It reminds me of how large a role he had in forming my teenage listening habits. As an American kid in the late 80’s the Peel Session records were an education in British pop music. That long list of band names and wireframe-gray design were immediately identifiable in a record bin, and still are. The Cocteau Twins, New Order, The Smiths, Joy Division. The Peel Session records were just a few songs, and so usually fairly cheap, which meant I was more likely to take a chance
I’m sure I bought most of them at the record store (sadly closed in 2002) that I used to stop by in downtown Silver Spring on the way home from school.
