ID Interactive Media Design Review 2004

Remind me why I stopped bothering to read ID magazine’s Interactive Media Design Reviews? Oh right, because the criteria for winning still seem to be:

1. Made with Flash (this rule is inviolable)
2. Runs in a pop-up window
3. Probably maximizes the browser window underneath
4. Is a self-promotion site or design firm’s portfolio

iTunes is the only exception to most of these rules, and they were obviously not excited about including it.

You’re overlooking Josh Nimoy’s ITP thesis, focused on the theme of robotic typography. Although the project is presented on the web, it is very much a physical computing work — one that points to a future where the term ‘dynamic signage’ comes to mean more than LED and screen-based display, including the physically dynamic as well. I had the great pleasure of working with Josh at Pentagram two summers ago.

Anyway. I think that your complaint is really a result of poor sampling. Some beautiful “interactive media” works — antenna design’s bloomberg terminal, for instance — were featured in the Annual Design Review.

It’s also an artifact of who submitted their work, isn’t it?
