What I can do near my house
I’m not sure why I decided to do this. Here is a list of all the local businesses in my neighborhood in central Austin (near 35th st. and MoPac) that I have actually patronized or at least visited (except where noted). There are actually many more businesses than these in the area, but I’ve only listed independant, Austin-based ones. So I am not counting Taco Bell or the Randall’s supermarket or things like that.
- a good liquor store
- a flower shop
- two gourmet pizza places (but unfortunately no cheap regular one)
- two decent Austin restaurants (Kirbey Lane for pancakes, enchiladas, etc. and Waterloo for burgers, beer, etc.)
- a gelato place
- a dry cleaners’ shop
- a tailoring and alterations shop
- a slightly expensive but pretty good Mexican restaurant
- two branches of a hair salon (the main one, and the “new talent”—that is, cheaper—one)
- two fancy home and garden stores
- a clock shop
- a convenience store
- the best coffee in Austin (a roaster, not a coffee shop)
- a “20th century modern” furniture store (which has lately become more like a regular used furniture store with a few nice pieces)
- an Oriental carpet store (actually two of these, I’ve only been in one)
- a sandwich (and cheesesteak) place
- a veterinarian
- a kind of cheesy art gallery
Just far enough to prefer to drive if in a hurry
- the best supermarket in the universe
- two camera shops
- a great local bar
- a cheap taco place
A little farther away (walking distance if I am not feeling lazy)
- a near-perfect used bookstore
- a truly great taco place
- a barbecue restaurant
- a food co-op
- a bike store
- an expensive but quite good hardware and gardening store
- a coffee shop with a great outside terrace
- a coffee shop only worth going to while doing laundry
- a caterer’s and lunch place with amazing breakfast tacos
- a couple of Asian restaurants
- two of the best video rental shops anywhere
- a tasteful sex toy and lingerie shop
- an ice cream store
- another gourmet pizza place
- a wacky toy store
- a “smoking accessories” and trippy tapestries shop
- a gay bookstore (where I have always meant to go but never have.)
- another sandwich place
- a drive-through beer and wine store
Some more that are in my immediate (a few minutes walk) neighborhood I’m aware of, but have never been to:
- a tiny design company (our next-door neighbors!)
- a wash-your-own-dog place
- two posh restaurants
- several salons of various kinds (nail, hair, etc.)
- a nice men’s clothing store
- a picture framer’s
- at least one jeweler’s
- a fresh pasta store
- several fancy clothing stores
- a butcher
- a chocolatier
- an expensive baby stuff store
- something that’s not quite a stationery story, more like a wedding invitations and frilly cards shop
