SXSW Day 1

Somehow it already seems longer than a day, and more than just three speakers. Zeldman seemed to have put his keynote together on the plane over. As much as I respect someone Zeldman, and I do, the opening day keynote really ought to be more substantive than “congratulations on coming to SXSW. It’s really cool and you should just go up and talk to anyone you want. And here’s a video of John Halcyon Styn talking about masturbation.” Jason Fried’s (37 Signals) talk was fine, though nothing too different from what you’d get reading their site. I am interested in your ideas, and wish to receive your newsletter. Oh wait, I already do.

Curt Cloninger had an energetic and nice presentation on “hot-wiring the creative process.” Although if the room hadn’t been so crowded I couldn’t move, I might have left halfway to see what else was going on. Though from Jones’ and others’ reports, the other rooms weren’t too inspired either. At the moment, I’m particularly looking forward to: the Daniel Pink presentation on Monday morning.
