Design Engaged 2005 Quick Notes

I’m back and reasonably rested from Design Engaged 2005. I’m not quite ready to look at it with much critical distance just yet, although Adam’s post makes a good start. I’m not even quite ready to compare it to last year’s model. I’m nearly tempted to say that this one was actually a bit better, once it got rolling by Friday afternoon. I promise a more thoughtful post about it all, but for now some personal highlights:
- Being back in Berlin for the first time since December 2002. Oh man, do I miss that place.
- Talking with Mike Migurski about Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and the possibilities of emergent outsourced automatic project management
- T-shirts!
- The Friedrichshein walking group’s amazing ideas like maps of ex-places
- Having Malcolm McCullough at my conference was like having a Beatle play at my birthday party
- Walking in Schoeneberg with Erik Spiekermann
- Almost 30% women, up from just 1% last year!
- Jack Schulze’s handful of quicksilver and mechanical buddy icon
- Louise Klinker’s “Crimewire” project
- Stamen’s taxi visualization project that had everyone swooning
- A really enjoyable breakfast at Gorki Park, our old Berlin hangout, with Ben and Mike
- Amazing buffet lunches organized by Tanja from Spreeblick
- The near-constant expression of joy and concentration on Eric Rodenbeck’s face (except during his Vito Acconci impressions)
- Christianne Woodley switching instantly from a state of zombie-like jetlag to delivering a really riveting presentation
- Firemouthyawningface
