Back from New York

Heather and I are back from a five-day weekend in New York, the first visit there for either of us in something like ten or more years. Some things I remembered really well: walking down St. Mark’s, places like the Met or Central Park of course, but for the most part it was entirely new. Special thanks to Adam and Nurri for a great dinner and for taking us out. And Liz Danzico and I finally got to chat after spending all of SXSW not quite finding the time to. Liz also gave me a quick tour of AIGA’s very cool offices. Eric Rodenbeck was even in town the last night of our trip, which was great. Here’s nearly everything else I can remember:

Food: nearly everything I ate was at least great, and frequently wonderful. With Adam and Nurri, we had a South Indian mega-dinner at the mighty Vatan. Although it was tricky finding veg options for Heather, Menchanko Tei Men Kui Tei provided some truly excellent ramen. The Grand Central Oyster Bar also served some great clam chowder. On Liz and Nurri’s reccommendation, I waited about 45 minutes in line at Shake Shack for a very fine burger, eaten in not quite enough sunshine at Madison Square Park. We had scoops of improbable but beautifully subtle red bean ice cream at the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, and after much deliberation, finally had a slice of very good street pizza on St. Mark’s.

Art: we went to our first Whitney Biennial. I’d hoped Momus would be in the house, but sadly, all there was was a lot of bad art (and a little good art). We pressed into MOMA on free night, and made a breakneck run through the Met, mostly looking at the fantastic Rauschenberg Combines.

When can we go again?
