Moving to Amazon
Big changes!
Yesterday was my last day at Surgient, where I’ve worked for the last two and a half years. Next week this time, I’ll be on a plane to Seattle, and a few days after that will start as the designer on the Amazon Mechanical Turk.
Needless to say, after ten years in Austin, this is a huge change for Heather and me. It’s incredibly scary to move to a part of the country we’ve barely even been to before, but I think we’re more excited than anxious. Mountains! Lakes! Green forests! Summers that are not short vacations in hell! (I can’t express how happy I am to be missing another Austin summer that stretches easily to the end of October and usually into November.)
Surgient has been a great place to work. I’ve never worked with a group of such smart, dedicated, and decent people. It amazes me almost every day how little “office politics” go on there and how well people work together. Surgient CEO Bill Daniel’s committed to Surgient being recognized as the “best software company to work for in Austin”; it’s certainly the best one I’ve seen here. In contrast to everywhere I’ve worked in the past, Amazon’s, like, a Real Big Corporation, and although that’s a huge relief to my grandmother, it’s certainly going to be very new to me.
Anyway, I’m hitting the ground running in Seattle on April 19, and will be at Seattle Mind Camp 2 on the 29th-30th. In case anyone reading this wants to meet up there, write me.

Durn it, I was hoping to meet you in person in Austin next month. Maybe in Seattle in the fall instead?

Hi Andrew - I’m commenting here because your entry on Seattle Mind Camp’s “delicious inside” doesn’t seem to accept comments. I just wanted to comment that I also felt that more people should have heard what Walter (your co-worker) had to say… so I tracked him down and chatted for about 10-15 minutes after the session. I’d be interested in talking to you too, to hear what you had hoped to hear/say in that session. BTW I was one of the loudmouths in the session but hopefully wasn’t shouting anyone down ;) I’m going to be posting my own thoughts on that session (and what interesting things we could have talked about) and will let you know! Steve
