Seattle impressions after 24 hours
I’ve arrived in Seattle, and am unpacked into my official corporate living solution. Although it’s a symphony in beige and durable carpeting, It’s right downtown, near the Pike Place Market and next to Belltown. It even has an honest to goodness view of the Puget sound from the balcony [sheesh, those grammarians -ao]. I’ve just barely begun to figure out the lay of the land, though I did bus up to Greenlake and bought a new bike today…then rode the 7(?) miles home. Man, they didn’t build hills like those back in Austin.
Seattle, in comparison to Austin, is not just huge and hilly, but a proper city, with a downtown that’s larger than a few blocks and busy. Everywhere things are much denser than Austin, too. But I sure feel sorry for those people who bought condos in tall buildings facing a view, only to have a taller building closer to the view block them. You can see that’s happened absolutely on every street, and it’s especially bad in Belltown. Unfortunately, the neighborhood’s nearly totally made up of those condo towers, with endless Thai bistros and coffee places around. Too many: I can’t seem to find anything like a supermarket in the area and have to bike up into Queen Anne. At the moment, I’m across the street from Larry’s Market, which I hope will have some nice options for dinner tonight.
Some other quick notes: food and restaurant options just boggle my mind. I’m quite sure I won’t find anything to replace Chango’s tacos, but things look awfully good here. And what was that again about Austin being the “live music captial of the world?” There are half a dozen bands I’d pay to see playing in the next three or four days here. I’ve already spent too much on books from the four or five bookstores I’ve been in (and I haven’t been to Peter Miller yet only because I wasn’t around during opening hours yesterday).
